Freshman Class Annual Canal Mussel Count Project

On May 1st, Biology students (the freshman class) went on a field trip to the Cape Cod Canal to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to survey mussel populations along the canal.

JPII students have been helping to monitor these populations for the past several years.

Park Ranger Samantha Gray along with JPII instructors Mr. Remillard, Ms. Poirier, and Ms. Lightner accompanied the students to the Sagamore Recreation Area under the Sagamore Bridge to count mussel populations along the canal.

They concluded the day at the Cape Cod Canal Visitor Center, testing water quality, observing plankton samples, and learning about the history of the canal.
